Hello Everyone! This is the January blog post of my monthly series. I did a post on Feminism, Me, Sustainable + Ethical Fashion, and a lot more topics. Burnout is something I have a lot of experience with and I think needs to be talked about. I wasn’t aware of what burnout was until this past year and learning what it is and what I can do to prevent it has benefited me. I wanted to write this post for a while not only so I could educate myself more, but also create more of an awareness for it. quick disclaimer: I want to stress that I understand that burnout is a serious thing and that a lot of people actually experience burnout, and I’m not trying to undermine it in any way.
I always start these posts out by clearing up what the topic is. So, What is Burnout? “Burnout is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress.” (Help Guide) To put it simply (which it isn’t), burnout is what happens when you overwork yourself. It’s a combination of stress and a prolonged amount of time.
Symptoms + Signs. It gets to the point where you are constantly exhausted or feel incapable of doing any work. That exhaustion can be physical and emotional. Some of the physical signs are fatigue, headaches, or restriction in everyday abilities. There are also mental effects + symptoms. Causes. Burnout can be caused by a lot of different things, from school to work. A heavy workload or a constant to-do list. You’re constantly being given work to do and it seems like that’s all your doing. Not getting enough sleep can also add to burnout. Demanding jobs and or school definitely strengthens burnout, especially if it’s an environment that hectic and high pressure. It’s terrible because while you may think that working a lot is good and beneficial, it can turn out to cut down on your efficiency and overall happiness.
Burnouts + Me. My burnouts or state of being burnout originates from several different things. Usually, it has to do with balancing school and this blog and having too much on my plate. I get in this state where I’m sad and tired all the time. Although it may not seem like it, I’m falling apart. I can’t think straight, my motivation to move becomes limited, and that’s only a few of the mental signs. Some of the physical signs of me overdoing it are migraines, acne, and neck pains. It’s different for everyone, but for me, it’s rock bottom.
I didn’t want to limit this post to just my experience, so I reached out to one of my favorite bloggers, Nikita (Nicculent), and asked her about her experience. She’s familiar to having burnouts, “I’ve noticed, after having a hundred burnouts, that I only get burned out when I lose the purpose of what I’m doing“, she told me. “When I get too anxious about my blog following and everything, I lose my true purpose of blogging which is to share and connect. And that makes me not want to do what I love”

What can you do to help yourselves or others? I’ve been reading articles on how to “bounce back from burnout”, not just for this post, but for myself too. Some of the ideas were really interesting, like meditating, yoga, and exercise. There are also really simple ways like doing something you enjoy or just doing a puzzle. Oh, and maybe taking BREAKS. I know this sounds obvious, but taking breaks can be one of those things where you feel that you can brush them aside. Breaks can make the biggest difference during a burnout or state of burnout.
Advice? My advice to someone experiencing burnout or this pressure + stress on their shoulders, sit down and breath. take a break. sort everything out and stay organized. cry if you need to. eat. spend time with your cat. Nikita also had some helpful advice and words of wisdom, “So I think, when someone is burned out, they should ask themselves what they’re burned out from and if that thing really matters.” And I totally agree. It’s ultimately up to you but, don’t worry about work or school, worry about yourself first.
